Growing Up

Andreas Nikolaus Lauda was born in Vienna, Austria, on February 22, 1949. In the 1940s, his paternal grandfather, industrialist Hans Lauda, helped found the Federation of Austrian Industries. Niki’s family was opposed to him pursuing a career in auto racing, and Lauda eventually cut contact with them. He started racing in the late 1960s, first in a Mini, then in Formula Vee, then in private Chevrons and Porsches.

Lauda obtained a bank loan in 1971 to purchase his way into the Formula Two circuit and was quickly promoted to the Formula One team. He borrowed money from the bank once more in 1973 to join the British Racing Motors (BRM) team. Niki caught Enzo Ferrari’s attention when he competed in that year’s Monaco Grand Prix, and he joined the Ferrari team in 1974. Lauda finished second in his first race for Ferrari, the Argentine Grand Prix, and went on to win the Spanish Grand Prix the following year.

He won four races in the new Ferrari 312T in 1975, then finished third in the Italian Grand Prix and first in the United States Grand Prix. Niki won four of the first six races of the 1976 season and finished second in two others. He was declared the winner of the British Grand Prix two months after the race because the Ferrari team had appealed James Hunt’s victory and Hunt had been disqualified as a result. Lauda’s car swerved off the track and burst into flames after colliding with an embankment during the 1976 German Grand Prix.

Niki’s head was severely burned, and his lungs and blood were damaged as a result of Lauda inhaling hot toxic gases before being rescued by fellow driver Arturo Merzario. Niki was conscious immediately following the accident, but he fell into a coma after being taken to the hospital. Lauda miraculously survived his injuries, and after regaining his health, he began wearing a red cap to conceal the extensive scarring on his head. Six weeks after his horrific crash, he returned to racing and finished fourth in the Italian Grand Prix.

Niki dropped out of the Japanese Grand Prix after two laps, claiming he didn’t feel safe driving in torrential rain, and this harmed his relationship with Ferrari. During the 1977 season, he left the Ferrari team and joined the Brabham-Alfa Romeo team in 1978. Lauda announced during practice for the 1979 Canadian Grand Prix that he was no longer interested in continuing “the silliness of driving around in circles” and would be retiring immediately.

After being offered a $3 million salary to join the McLaren team in 1982, he came out of retirement. Niki won the Long Beach Grand Prix in 1982 and the Monaco Grand Prix in 1984 before breaking his wrist while practicing for the 1985 Belgian Grand Prix. Niki officially retired from racing at the end of the 1985 season.

Following his retirement, he held non-racing positions with several Formula One teams, including a consulting role with the Ferrari team in 1993 and a non-executive chairman role with the Mercedes AMG Petronas team in 2012. Lauda was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1993, and he was honored with a stamp by the Austrian post office in 2005. A few days later, at the 2019 Monaco Grand Prix, drivers and fans wore red caps in memory of Niki, and the Mercedes team painted their car’s halo safety device red and adorned it with a sticker that read “Niki, we miss you.” Arnold Schwarzenegger, Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen, and several Formula One drivers, including Jackie Stewart, Lewis Hamilton, and Jean Alesi, attended Lauda’s funeral at St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna.
