On June 15, 1969, in Baldwin Hills, South Central Los Angeles, O’Shea Jackson was born. His father worked as a groundskeeper and machinist, and his mother worked as a hospital secretary. Ice Cube grew up with two siblings: a half-sister who died in her early twenties and an older brother.
Ice Cube became interested in hip-hop in his early adolescence and began writing raps in a typewriting class at Los Angeles George Washington Preparatory High School. Jackson wrote his first rap song in 9th grade after a classmate, Kiddo, challenged him to write a song during class.
You’ll never guess how Ice Cube got his name… Jackson’s older brother used to threaten him by saying he’d throw him in the freezer and pull him out when he was the size of an ice cube. Jackson came up with the name, and it became popular.
On April 26, 1992, Ice Cube married Kimberley Woodruff. They have four children: O’Shea Jr. (who played him in the 2015 biopic Straight Outta Compton), Darrell (b. 1992), Kaereema (b. 1994), and Shareef (b. 1995). Ice Cube was interviewed on NPR’s Fresh Air in January 2005 by Terry Gross, who asked if he allowed his children to listen to his music.
“What’s worked for me is instilling a level of self-respect in my kids and helping them understand the content of not just music, but the violence found on the evening news,” he responded. When asked what he tells his children about profanity, he replied that he tells his children that there are appropriate times to use any kind of language, but that certain words should not be used around adults out of respect.
Ice Cube and his group C.I.A. released the Dr. Dre-produced single My Posse in 1987. Ice Cube showed Eazy-E the lyrics to “Boyz-n-the-Hood” after the collaboration. The song was recorded by Eazy-E for N.W.A. Ice Cube, along with Dr. Dre and MC Ren, became full-time members of N.W.A. Ice Cube wrote the rhymes for Dr. Dre and Eazy-1988 E’s album Straight Outta Compton.
However, Ice Cube left N.W.A shortly after due to a contract dispute with the group’s manager, Jerry Heller. Jackson filed a private lawsuit against Jerry Heller, which was later settled out of court. This sparked a feud between Cube and N.W.A., which was reflected in several later tracks. He then went solo, releasing the smash hit ‘America’s Most Wanted.’ Cube expanded his career by starring in ‘Boyz n the Hood,’ the humble beginning of a very successful film career.
Ice Cube has a net worth of $160 million dollars.

Ice Cube’s first solo album, “AmeriKKK’a Most Wanted,” was released in May 1990 to immediate success, riding the wave of rap’s massive popularity at the time. The following year, he released “Kill at Will,” the first hip hop EP to go Platinum. Ice Cube put his acting skills to the test in 1991, when he played Doughboy in John Singleton’s crime drama “Boyz n the Hood.” His performance was widely acclaimed and praised by critics.
In 1991, his second album, “Death Certificate,” was released. It sparked debate among both audiences and critics. In 1992, he performed at Lollapalooza, gaining a larger fan base. “The Predator,” his third album, was released in November 1992. It was the first album in history to debut at No. 1 on both the pop and R&B charts, and it was well received by critics. It is still his most commercially successful release, selling over three million copies in the United States.
Ice Cube’s rap fan base began to dwindle in 1993. His fourth album, “Lethal Injection,” was not well received by critics. He took a break from music after that, and his fifth album (War & Peace Vol. 1) wasn’t released until 1998. He joined Dr. Dre, Eminem, and Snoop Dog on the “Up in Smoke Tour” in 2000, and waited six years before releasing his next album, “Laugh Now, Cry Later,” which debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard Charts. Ice Cube’s ninth solo album, “I Am the West,” was released on September 28, 2010.
Career as an Actor
Ice Cube made his film debut in 1991 with “Boyz n the Hood.” Over the next few years, he appeared in a handful of films. “Friday,” a film starring, written by, and produced by Ice Cube, was released to critical and commercial success in 1995. “Friday” spawned a number of sequels. He appeared in the 1997 film “Anaconda.” “The Players Club,” which he directed, produced, wrote, and starred in, was released in 1998.
“Are We There Yet?” and its sequels, “21 Jump Street” and “22 Jump Street,” “Straight Outta Compton,” “xXX: Return of Xander Cage,” and “Fist Fight” are some of Ice Cube’s other films. In October 2021, it was revealed that Ice Cube had decided to withdraw from an upcoming film production of a comedy called “Oh Hell No” because he refused to get a COVID-19 vaccine, which was required because the production was set to film in Hawaii. By leaving the film, Cube forfeited a $9 million salary.
Eric Wright, better known as Easy-E, founded the now-famous rap group N.W.A. Jackson wrote songs for him and the group after they had some success with them. Jackson would later become a full-time member of the group. Jackson was a fantastic writer, penning all of Wright’s verses as well as some of Dr. Dre’s on the group’s debut album Straight Outta Compton.
The album is widely regarded as one of the best group rap albums of all time, and it provided a voice for troubled youth at the time. The album expressed outrage over police brutality and the reality of inner-city crime.
The group was labeled as Gangsta Rap in the Hip Hop genre. Jackson, on the other hand, described the group’s genre as “Reality Rap.” The rawness, vulgarity, and delivery of their rhymes stemmed from their frustration with their daily lives in South Central Los Angeles.
N.W.A was the first group to use that rap style to criticize authority. This, of course, drew harsh criticism from the media and the police. The group did not falter and remained one of the hottest groups in the late 1980s.
As Jackson’s fame grew, so did his pay, and he began to question his pay under Jerry Heller’s management. Jackson felt he was underpaid, despite the fact that he wrote the majority of the group’s content. Unfortunately, Jackson and Heller were unable to reach an agreement, prompting Jackson to leave the group and pursue a solo career.
Ice Cube founded Westside Connection in 1996 with Mack 10 and WC. He released two albums with the collaboration in addition to his solo career. Ice Cube’s Solo by Cube clothing line sells hooded sweatshirts with built-in headphones. He has been the Coors Light beer spokesperson since 2011. On January 11, 2017, Ice Cube announced his new project, Big3. Big3 is a fantasy professional basketball league comprised of former NBA stars. Season one premiered in June of 2017.
Ice Cube paid $7.25 million for a home in Marina Del Rey, California in May 2016. He purchased the house from Jean-Claude Van Damme, who purchased it in 2012 as a brand new spec mansion for $6 million. Cube and his wife also have a large mansion in Encino, California, which they purchased for $2.36 million in June 1996. This home has 7 bedrooms in a nearly 8,000 square-foot main house with pool, spa, and full-size basketball court on a 1.11 acre lot.
Ice Cube is one of the most successful rappers in history, as evidenced by his net worth of more than $160 million. He decided to go solo because he knew he was worth more, and he has gradually expanded his career into new areas such as producing and starring in films.
