Cash Money Records

Birdman and his brother Ronald “Slim” Williams became aware of the emerging “bounce” sub-genre of hip-hop, which was popular in New Orleans nightclubs at the time, after being released from prison. In order to capitalize on the trend, the brothers founded their own record label in 1991. They called it Cash Money Records. Neither brother had any prior experience running a record label or working in the music industry.

They had no recording studio and no artists on their roster. On the other hand, the brothers did have around $100,000 in startup capital, which may or may not have been provided by their half brother Terrence, who was allegedly a drug dealer. Terrence Williams was the leader of the notorious Hot Boys drug gang.

The name “Cash Money Records” was chosen by Ronald and Bryan as a nod to the recently released film “New Jack City,” in which Wesley Snipes played a wealthy New York City gangster who leads a group known as the “Cash Money Brothers.”

Soon after, the duo was traveling across Louisiana, catching acts at various nightclubs in the hopes of finding artists to sign to their brand new label. Kilo G, a rapper, was the first artist they signed. Cash Money’s first project was his 1992 horrorcore album “The Sleepwalker.” Birdman and Slim kept looking for new artists to sign. Birdman eventually persuaded his friend, DJ Mannie Fresh, to become Cash Money’s in-house producer.

By the mid-1990s, Cash Money had become one of the most popular independent record labels in the South. Birdman met Dwayne Carter, a 12-year-old rapper from his hometown, in 1995. Carter was signed to Cash Money by Birdman. You might recognize him as Lil’ Wayne.

Cash Money experienced a number of setbacks despite its regional success. Kilo G, Pimp Daddy, and Yella, for example, were all Cash Money artists who were murdered in the 1990s. Birdman and his brother Slim, desperate for success, recruited Turk and Juvenile to form the Hot Boys band, which soon included Lil Wayne and B.G. This proved to be Cash Money’s ticket.

Between 1994 and 1997, Cash Money Records signed dozens of new artists through sheer hard work and talent. Even more impressive, their albums were selling between 25,000 and 50,000 copies without the help of a major label’s distribution or promotion. In the first two months, The Hot Boys’ debut album sold 300,000 copies.

Deal with Universal Records

Cash Money Records was being pursued by a number of record labels in 1998 for a partnership or outright acquisition. Their timing was ideal, as Sony and Universal Music were fighting for market share. Ronald and Birdman eventually signed with Universal Music Group, which offered them a $30 million contract.

The brothers received $3 million up front, with a guaranteed $1.5 million per album. But, in the most audacious move of all, when Cash Money signed with Universal, they negotiated a deal that allowed them to own their masters, something that not even The Beatles had! Instead of receiving a few pennies for each record sold, the company receives a portion of the profits generated per unit.
Universal received simple 7% fee for distributing Cash Money albums and singles in exchange for no equity in the label.Universal, on the other hand, would soon be more than twice the size of its two closest competitors… combined, thanks to the rise of Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, and Drake years later. The Universal contract was worth $30 million in total.

Birdman Legal Problems

Birdman was arrested in Tennessee in November 2007 and was found in possession of nearly a pound of marijuana. Thomas Marasciullo sued Birdman, Lil Wayne, and Cash Money Records for copyright infringement in 2009.

Russ sold the house to Birdman for $14.5 million just two years later. A bank threatened to evict Birdman from his 20,000-square-foot waterfront mansion in January 2018. Birdman immediately tried to sell the house for a whopping $20 million, but no one was interested.

He reduced the asking price to $16.9 million, then $15 million, before accepting $10.9 million in November 2019. In December 2021, a Los Angeles resident sued Birdman for $114,000 in back rent on a Bel-Air mansion.
