Horovitz had a relationship with American actress Molly Ringwald in the late 1980s. They met while filming The Pick-up Artist. Between 1992 and 1995, Horovitz was married to actress Ione Skye. They divorced in 1999 after separating in 1995. He has been dating riot grrrl artist and Bikini Kill singer Kathleen Hanna since 1997, and they married in 2006.
The Punk Singer, a 2013 documentary film about Hanna’s life and career, features Horovitz prominently; he even shot a scene himself to show Hanna’s distressed reaction to the Lyme disease medication she was taking. Following his tonic-clonic seizure in 2003, Horovitz began wearing a medical alert bracelet.

Career
Horovitz began his musical career as a member of the punk band the Young and the Useless, who frequently shared the stage with the Beastie Boys. When Beastie Boys guitarist John Berry left the band in 1982, Horovitz took his place. At the time, he was only 16 years old. The Beastie Boys’ sound evolved from a hardcore punk band to a more hip-hop-oriented group after Ad-Rock joined the band, which also included Mike D and Adam Yauch.
The Beastie Boys were signed to Def Jam Records and released their debut album, ‘Licensed to Ill,’ in 1986. The album was a commercial smash, with six hit singles. Seven more albums were released, and by 2010, the Beastie Boys had sold 22 million records in the United States alone, with a total of 40 million sold worldwide. The Beastie Boys were elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.
