Plagiarism Problems

Several bloggers noted how similar the film was to a 2007 comic called “Justin M. Damiano” by Ghost World creator Dan Clowes. Shia took the film offline, claiming that he had no intention of imitating Clowes. He claimed to have been “inspired” by him and “lost in the creative process.”
LaBeouf’s other work has come under scrutiny since the discovery of Clowe’s plagiarism. “Let’s Fucking Party” and “Stale N Mate,” LaBeouf’s graphic novels, were based on Benoît Duteurtre’s “The Little Girl and the Cigarette” and Charles Bukowski’s “Assault,” respectively.
In early 2014, LaBeouf addressed the plagiarism allegations leveled against him. He admitted that he thought copyright laws were too restrictive, preventing ideas from flowing freely. He then took to Twitter to describe his next project, Daniel Boring, a clear reference to another Clowes comic, David Boring. Furthermore, the story description was completely plagiarized from Clowes. Clowes’ attorneys issued a cease-and-desist letter to LaBoeuf. Shia tweeted about it.
