James Francis Cameron was born in Ontario, Canada, on August 16, 1954. He attended the ‘Stamford Collegiate School’ in Ontario, and then the ‘Troy High School’ in California. He enrolled in a Physics course at ‘Fullerton College,’ but dropped out before graduating. To support himself, this aspiring filmmaker worked as a truck driver and learned everything he could about special effects.
Private Life
Cameron was born in Canada and has lived in the United States since 1971. He applied for citizenship in 2004, but withdrew his application after George W. Bush was elected president. Cameron has married five times. From 1978 to 1984, he was married to Sharon Williams.
Cameron married film producer Gale Anne Hurd one year after his divorce from Williams. Their marriage ended in 1989. From 1989 to 1991, he was married to director Kathryn Bigelow. Soon after their marriage, the couple spent $1.8 million on a Beverly Hills home. Kathryn listed this home for $13 million in 2018.
Cameron’s first daughter, Josephine Archer Cameron, was born in 1993, to actress Linda Hamilton. The couple married in 1997, but divorced 18 months later amid rumors of Cameron’s affair with actress Suzy Amis. When they divorced, he was forced to pay Hamilton a sizable settlement of $50 million.
Cameron married his fifth wife, Amis, in the year 2000. They have three children: two daughters and a son. Cameron has specialized in deep-sea exploration over the years. This is due to his work on The Abyss and Titanic, as well as his lifelong interest in shipwrecks.
(He’s also produced a number of documentaries on the subject over the years.) Cameron was named National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence in 2011, and a year later, he became the first person to solo dive to the Mariana Trench, the deepest part of the Earth’s ocean.
James Cameron’s Career
In 1978, James Cameron was inspired by the book ‘Screenplay’ by British actor Syd Field and wrote the script for the film ‘Xenogenesis.’ The script called for a ten-minute science-fiction film shot on a 35mm reel. He was soon hired by ‘Roger Corman Studios’ to create miniature models for low-budget films.
During this time, he also began working on ‘Piranha II: The Spawning,’ a sequel to the previous sci-fi horror film, first as the special effects supervisor and then as the director. In 1993, the director formed a company called ‘Digital Domain with special effects experts Scott Ross and Stan Winston. The California-based company is well-known for producing spectacular special effects for films.
‘True Lies,’ starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, and ‘Strange Days,’ starring Ralph Fiennes, were both released in 1994-95. ‘Titanic,’ starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, was released in 1997. With a $200 million budget, it is considered one of the highest-grossing films in history.
‘Avatar,’ starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver, was released in 3D in 2009. Cameron directed, co-produced, and wrote the film, and its technology was revolutionary in the world of cinema.

James Cameron’s Success
Cameron’s career took off in 1984 when he directed “The Terminator”. He famously sold the rights to his story concept to producer Gale Anne Hurd for $1 in order to get the film made without compromising his vision. In exchange, Hurd agreed to allow Cameron to direct the film himself. Selling his concept had both advantages and disadvantages.
On the plus side, James Cameron’s first Terminator film grossed $78 million on a $7 million budget. It was later selected for preservation by the United States National Film Registry. Cameron, on the other hand, lost control of future Terminator sequels, merchandise, and other properties.
Cameron would later have to sit through several heinous film installments, including Terminator: Genisys, with his child. However, under the terms of the 1984 contract, James regained ownership of the franchise in 2019. Another advantage of Terminator was the opportunity to create and direct additional franchises.
He received additional recognition with Aliens (1986), which was nominated for seven Academy Awards and won awards for Best Sound Editing and Best Visual Effects; The Abyss (1989), which received four Academy Award nominations and won Best Visual Effects; and Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), which won four Academy Awards for Best Makeup, Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Effects Editing, and Best Visual Effects.
Titanic (1997) and Avatar (2001) were two of James Cameron’s most successful films (2009). Titanic received 14 Academy Award nominations in 1998, tying the record set by 1950’s All About Eve. Titanic is also Cameron’s second film to be selected for preservation in the National Film Registry of the United States. Avatar, the 2009 3D sensation, was nominated for nine Academy Awards and ended up winning three (for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Visual Effects.)
Cameron has also co-founded three production companies throughout his career: Lightstorm Entertainment, Digital Domain, and Earthship Productions. Cameron was named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world in 2010.
Salary History
Without accounting for inflation, Cameron has earned over $7 billion in revenue from foreign markets, DVDs, video games, TV shows, and merchandise. With Titanic ($2.19 billion) and Avatar ($2.78 billion), he has the distinction of directing two of the highest-grossing films of all time. He was also the first person to direct a film with a $100 million budget, and a $200 million budget with Titanic and Avatar, which cost roughly $500 million when it was released in theaters in 2009.
Cameron’s biggest payday was from Titanic. After the film’s budget was significantly exceeded, he agreed to exchange his $8 million directing fee for backend profits. This proved to be a wise decision, as it has netted him over $650 million to date, making him one of the wealthiest directors of all time.
He will be able to write, produce, and direct some of the biggest movies ever thanks to Avatar while pursuing a career in film. Cameron made an estimated $260 million in 2010 alone as a result of the massive success of Avatar. He has earned more than $350 million from Avatar to date.
Please keep in mind that James Cameron has made at least $1 billion from Avatar and Titanic alone.
