Growing Up

On April 16, 1973, Akon was born in St. Louis, Missouri. He spent a large part of his childhood in Senegal, which he refers to as his “hometown.” Akon learned to play the drums, guitar, and djembe. Akon relocated to New Jersey with his family when he was seven years old. He struggled to get along with other kids during his adolescence. When he and his older brother graduated from high school, their parents abandoned them in Jersey City.

In an interview with Blender, Akon claims to have six children with three women, with whom he has excellent relationships. He claims he wants to shield his family from public scrutiny. Akon owns a diamond mine in South Africa and says, “I don’t believe in conflict diamonds.” That was just a film. Consider this: Until Blood Diamond was released, no one thought or cared about conflict diamonds.

He has since stated, however, that he accepts the existence of blood diamonds and that he is a co-owner of an African mine dedicated to avoiding the use of blood diamonds while also donating profits to local communities. Akon made an appearance on ITV2’s The Hot Desk. He revealed on the show that he is a Chelsea F.C. fan.
