Growing Up

On April 16, 1973, Akon was born in St. Louis, Missouri. He spent a large part of his childhood in Senegal, which he refers to as his “hometown.” Akon learned to play the drums, guitar, and djembe. Akon relocated to New Jersey with his family when he was seven years old. He struggled to get along with other kids during his adolescence. When he and his older brother graduated from high school, their parents abandoned them in Jersey City.

In an interview with Blender, Akon claims to have six children with three women, with whom he has excellent relationships. He claims he wants to shield his family from public scrutiny. Akon owns a diamond mine in South Africa and says, “I don’t believe in conflict diamonds.” That was just a film. Consider this: Until Blood Diamond was released, no one thought or cared about conflict diamonds.

He has since stated, however, that he accepts the existence of blood diamonds and that he is a co-owner of an African mine dedicated to avoiding the use of blood diamonds while also donating profits to local communities. Akon made an appearance on ITV2’s The Hot Desk. He revealed on the show that he is a Chelsea F.C. fan.

Akon’s music career began in 2004 with the release of his debut album, ‘Trouble.’ The album was a huge success, with numerous hit singles including ‘Locked Up,’ ‘Bananza,’ ‘Ghetto,’ and ‘Lonely.’ Following the success of his debut album, he established his own record labels, ‘Kon Live Distribution and ‘Konvict Muzik.’ His album ‘Konvicted’ helped him gain more fame by featuring several chart-topping singles.

The album broke numerous records by receiving multiple platinum certificates. ‘Konvicted’ also featured cameos from stars like Eminem and Snoop Dogg. Akon has worked with legendary musicians such as Whitney Houston, Lionel Richie, and Gwen Stafani. Akon co-wrote Lady Gaga’s debut single ‘Just Dance,’ and he also sang a duet ‘Hold My Hand’ with Michael Jackson, the legendary pop star.

Akon released his fourth studio album, ‘Stadium,’ in 2015. The album was also made available in five different genres (Euro, Pop, Urban, Island, and World). He appeared in the Chinese reality TV show ‘I Am a Singer’ in 2016 alongside Jeff Chang. Akon is also the founder of the Konfidence Foundation, whose main goal is to empower African and American youth.
