Controversy

Gary made controversial statements about apartheid in South Africa in 1966, supporting the country’s policies and describing whites as having the “ability to maintain civilized values and standards” while describing other South Africans as “alien barbarians” who believed in “primitive magic” and practiced “ritual murder and polygamy.” These remarks clearly sparked outrage, particularly among civil rights activists. At the 1969 PGA Championship, some people protested directly against Player. The controversy raged on well into the 1970s when he was called a racist by hecklers at another tournament.

By 1987, he had retracted his previous statements on South African apartheid. In an interview that year, he called apartheid a “cancerous disease.” He also stated that he was relieved that apartheid was coming to an end. He later claimed that the South African government brainwashed him into believing in apartheid. Later, through his charity, The Player Foundation, he raised millions of dollars for disadvantaged youths in South Africa.

In 1962, after losing the Masters Tournament, Player returned home with the green jacket from Augusta National. Only winners of the Master’s Tournament are permitted to keep their jackets, while others must keep their jackets on club grounds. In 1962, after returning his jacket to his home in South Africa, he received a phone call from the club Chairman demanding that he return it.
