Philip Alfred Mickelson was born on June 16, 1970 in San Diego, California. His father, Philip Mickelson, was a retired naval aviator and airline pilot. Mickelson grew up in San Diego, California, and Scottsdale, Arizona. He learned to play golf by copying his father’s style. This is why, despite being right-handed in real life, he has a left-handed swing. He graduated from the University of San Diego High School in 1988.
In 1996, Mickelson married his wife Amy. They share three children: Amanda Brynn (born in June 1999), Evan Samuel (born in March 2003), and Sophia Isabel (October 2001).

Phil Mickelson began golf training at a young age with the assistance of his father. Mickelson later became a professional golfer in 1992. However, before entering the professional ranks, he began his amateur career at Arizona State University.
Mickelson had incredible success as an amateur player, winning three consecutive Haskins Awards and three NCAA championships. He became only the second collegiate golfer to be named All-American. His professional career began in 1992, and the rest is history.

He was also the event’s oldest winner, at 48 years old. In December 2019, he announced that he would forego competing in the Waste Management Phoenix Open for the first time since 1989 in order to compete in the Saudi International golf tournament. He finished third in the Saudi Arabia event in February 2020.
