Roger Thomas Staubach was born on February 5, 1942 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Elizabeth and Robert Staubach raised him as their only child. He was raised in Silverton, a northeastern Cincinnati suburb. Career in College
Staubach enrolled in the United States Naval Academy in 1961 after attending the New Mexico Military Institute for a year. He joined the Navy Midshipmen football team as a quarterback and played his first game as a third-class midshipman (sophomore) against the University of Minnesota in 1962. In his first game, he relieved starter Ron Klemick, but the team lost 21-0 to Minnesota. A few weeks later, Staubach was given the opportunity to play in the famous Army-Navy game, in which President John F. Kennedy tossed the coin. Staubach’s team defeated Army 31-14.
Staubach maintained a high level of performance throughout his college career. He led the Midshipmen to a final ranking of No. 2 in the country during his second class (junior) season in 1963, after losing on New Year’s Day to the No. 1 team, the University of Texas, in 1964 Cotton Bowl). After alternating with Craig Morton for a few games, Staubach took over as quarterback full-time in Week 8 of the 1971 season. He would go on to lead the Cowboys to ten straight victories, including the team’s first Super Bowl victory over the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl VI in January 1972. Following his successful season, Staubach negotiated his own contract, securing a three-year deal worth approximately $75,000 per year.
Staubach was forced to miss most of the 1972 season due to a separated shoulder, but he returned in a divisional playoff game against the San Francisco 49ers, where he threw two touchdown passes in the final 90 seconds to win 30-28. He would be the Cowboys’ starting quarterback for the rest of his career, including in 1977, when he led them to their second Super Bowl victory, defeating the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XII.
Staubach announced his retirement in 1979 and officially retired from football in March 1980, after 11 NFL seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, with 1,685 completions for 22,700 yards, 153 touchdowns, and 109 interceptions. He was a Supply Corps officer at the Chu Lai base/port until September 1967, supervising 41 enlisted men. He finished the rest of his naval career in the United States, where he played football on various service teams in preparation for a future NFL career.
Business Ventures
Staubach and his partner, Robert Holloway Jr., founded The Staubach Company in 1977. Prior to that, from 1970 to 1977, he worked in the real estate business for the Henry S. Miller Company during his off-seasons. Holloway was bought out by him in 1982. The Staubach Company has collaborated with major corporations such as AT&T, McDonald’s, K Mart Corporation, and the Hospital Corporation of America, and it owns 27 apartment complexes in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
