Early Years

Ray Charles Leonard was born in Wilmington, North Carolina on May 17, 1956. Ray, who was raised alongside six siblings, moved to Washington, D.C. with his family when he was three years old. Ray was named by his mother after the famous singer Ray Charles. When Ray was ten years old, the family moved to Palmer Park, Maryland.

Ray earned a reputation as a shy student while in high school. Instead of playing with other kids, Leonard preferred to stay at home and read comic books while playing with his dog. He was also an excellent student, and his mother later remarked that she never had to come to school to hear about any problems Ray might have had.

Sugar Ray Leonard Relationship & More

Sugar Ray Leonard married Juanita Wilkinson, his childhood sweetheart, in 1980. They had been together for many years and had a six-year-old son by this time. Wilkinson and Leonard had another child in 1984. The couple separated in 1990.

Several details about their relationship were revealed as a result of the court proceedings. Juanita claimed Ray had been drinking and using cocaine. She also claimed that Ray had physically abused her while she was drunk. Leonard acknowledged that these claims were true, and he later admitted that he began using cocaine because he missed the thrill of competing at the highest level. However, he insisted that his substance abuse problems were not the cause of the relationship’s demise.

Sugar Ray met Bernadette Robi one year before his divorce. Robi and Leonard tied the knot in 1993. Leonard had his entire outdoor property in Pacific Palisades converted into a flower garden with tens of thousands of flowers flown in from Holland for their wedding ceremony, which was quite elaborate.

Ray started boxing in 1969, following in his older brother Roger’s footsteps. After a rocky start, Leonard boxed in the Eastern Olympic Trials, lying about his age like Sugar Ray Robinson had done decades before. Despite only reaching the semifinals, Ray caught the eye of the Olympic Team’s assistant coach, who described him as “sweet as sugar.” Leonard was dubbed “Sugar Ray” by those who put two and two together.

Leonard had won the National Golden Gloves Lightweight Championship as well as the Light Welterweight Championship by the end of his amateur career. He was also selected to the United States Olympic Team. He won a gold medal as the United States’ light-welterweight representative in 1976.

Leonard later revealed in an autobiography that he had been sexually abused as a child. He revealed in his 2011 autobiography that he was abused by two different men. The first was an Olympic trainer, and the second was a benefactor. He has since declared himself a “poster child” for child abuse and actively encourages other victims to come forward and report their abuse.

Sugar Ray Leonard decided to go pro after the Olympics in order to support his first child. He then began training with Angelo Dundee, who previously worked with Muhammad Ali. Sugar Ray made his pro debut in 1977 against Luis “The Bull” Vega. Leonard also fought Floyd Mayweather Sr. (Floyd Jr.’s father) in 1978. He won the NABF Welterweight Championship in 1979.

Leonard won his first world title in 1979 when he defeated Wilfred Benitez for the WBC Welterweight Championship. Sugar Ray took home a $1 million prize. To defend his title, Leonard defeated Dave “Boy” Green in 1980. He later earned more than $9 million for his fight with Roberto Duran, which he lost convincingly. Sugar Ray, on the other hand, was granted a rematch later that year, for which he was paid $7 million. Sugar Ray outboxed and taunted Duran until he simply quit out of embarrassment.

Sugar Ray continued to defend his title, earning $11 million in a win over Thomas Hearns. Leonard retired in 1982 after suffering a detached retina. Despite concerns about his recently repaired eye, he declared a comeback in 1983. Leonard announced his retirement after a string of defeats. Sugar Ray made another comeback in 1986, fighting Marvin Hagler and earning at least $11 million. He won the fight on a split decision.

Leonard made another comeback in 1988 when he received a guaranteed payout of at least $10 million for fighting Donny Lalonde. He won the fight and successfully defended his title against Thomas Hearns, earning a guaranteed $14 million. Leonard fought in what he promised fans would be his final match in 1991, losing to Terry Norris. Sugar Ray came out of retirement five years later, at the age of 40, to fight Hector Camacho. Unfortunately, he was knocked out for the first time in his career, and Leonard eventually decided to retire.

Here are some of Sugar Ray Leonard’s best moments:
