Early Years

On December 17, 1978, Emmanuel Dapridran Pacquiao was born in Kibawe, Bukidnon, a small municipality in the Philippines. He was raised by his mother and father with six siblings until sixth grade when his parents divorced. Pacquiao was inspired to participate in combat sports at a young age after watching Bruce Lee videos and Mohammed Ali fights. His family was impoverished, and as a result, he had to drop out of high school. Pacquiao began boxing at the age of 14 – the same year he left home to help his mother support his siblings. He has stated that he began boxing in order to survive because it was something he knew he was good at while living on the streets.

Pacquiao began his professional career at the age of 16, despite having previously earned a spot on the national Filipino team at the age of 14. The government paid for his room and board, and he had an amateur record of 60 wins and four losses. Manny Pacquiao, at 4’11 and 98 pounds, was not legally permitted to fight. He later admitted to stuffing weights into his socks during weigh-ins in order to compete. He beat Edmund Ignacio in his first professional light flyweight fight.

Pacquiao’s first defeat came against Rustico Torrecampo, but he went on to win his next 15 fights. After defeating Chatchai Sasakul for his first major title, he went on to win the super bantamweight title in 2001. In 2003, he made his featherweight debut, defeating Antonio Barrera via TKO in the eleventh round. Pacquiao moved up to super featherweight in 2005 to face Erik Morales. Despite losing the first fight against his opponent, he won in 2006. Pacquiao defeated Morales again in 2006 after successfully defending his title against a variety of opponents.

Pacquiao returned to the lightweight division in 2008, winning his fifth title in the process. That same year, he moved up to welterweight and defeated Oscar De La Hoya after gaining weight to 148 pounds. Pacquiao dropped to light-welterweight to face Ricky Hatton in 2009. He became a six-division champion after winning. Pacquiao moved up to the welterweight division and took on a new opponent, Floyd Mayweather.

Despite the fact that negotiations with Mayweather initially failed, Pacquiao continued to fight various fighters for the next five years, earning even more titles in the process. Finally, in 2015, the two fought, with Pacquiao losing in a contentious decision. Pacquiao returned to professional boxing with a number of additional victories after temporarily retiring following the fight, but Mayweather refused a rematch.

Summing-Up

Some may believe that naming a military colonel, a multimillionaire, a professional boxer who has broken championship records, a basketball team owner, a former professional basketball player, a politician, and a former actor is impossible.
