Career
Anthony Joshua won the Haringey Boxing Cup twice in a row in 2009 and 2010. His twenties were a resounding success, as he won all 18 amateur fights. In June 2011, he defeated Eric Berechlin and Cathal McMonagle in the European Amateur Boxing Championships. However, he was interrupted by Mihai Nistor, a Romanian.
He had a 40-3 amateur record and was named Amateur Boxer of the Year by the Boxing Writers Club of Great Britain in 2011. Despite being a relative unknown on the international stage, his first appearance at the London Olympics resulted in a gold medal in 2012.
Joshua’s fight with Klitschko was his most important fight. Klitschko was a boxing legend who had only lost three professional fights. A rematch between Klitschko and him was expected, but on 3 August 2017, Klitschko announced his retirement from boxing, putting an end to speculation about another fight. Anthony Joshua was set to defend his WBA title against Kubrat Pulev next.
He’d then face Joseph Parker for his biggest career payday of £18 million. The fight was scheduled for January 8, 2018 at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium. Joshua successfully defended his WBO title. He also kept his WBA, IBF, and IBO titles.
He recently made headlines for his fight with Andy Ruiz Jr., in which Ruiz defeated Joshua and took his belt. Ruiz was the underdog in the fight, and no one expected him to win.
Highlights
Here are some of Anthony Joshua’s best moments:
- Super Heavyweight (2009)
- He won the ABA National Championships 91 kg+ in Bethnal Green, London as a Super Heavyweight (2010)
- Super Heavyweight Olympic Gold Medalist as a member of Team GB (2012)
Career in Boxing
Joshua quickly improved after beginning to box in 2007. He became a member of the Finchley ABC club in North London, which is also home to professional heavyweight boxer Derek Chisora. Joshua had already won several competitions by 2009, including the Haringey Box Cup. He won the senior ABA Championships in 2010 and declined the opportunity to turn professional, preferring to remain an amateur until he had more wins.
He made the Great Britain Boxing team and won the GB amateur title in 2010. He came close to winning the European Championships in 2011, but was defeated by Romanian Mihai Nistor. Despite having a record of 40-3, he was named Amateur Boxer of the Year in 2011.
Joshua’s early success earned him a place in the London Olympics in 2012. Joshua won the Olympic gold medal after several highly contested and criticized matches, though several critics in the sport believe that the home advantage of having the Olympics in England played a role in this decision. In 2013, he was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire for his contributions to boxing.
He passed up a $60,000 payday by not going pro. Later, he explained his decision:
“It was simple to decline the £50,000 offer. I’m not in it for the money; I’m in it for the medals.”

Famous Paydays
He defeated Wladimir Klitschko in April 2017 to win the vacant WBA (Super) and IBO heavyweight titles, improving his record to 19-0 with 19 knockouts. The fight netted him $17 million. He then won $12.5 million by defeating Carlos Takam.
On June 1st, 2019, Anthony was defeated by Andy Ruiz, Jr., a relative unknown. Ruiz won $200,000 in his previous match. Ruiz was paid $7 million for defeating Joshua. When all sources of income are considered, Anthony earned $25 million from the fight. The defeat put a $60 million payday against Deontay Wilder on shaky ground.
Anthony was guaranteed $60 million in December 2019 to defend Ruiz again in Saudi Arabia. Andy had a $9 million guarantee. Anthony was victorious via unanimous decision.
Anthony Joshua earned $42 million from purses and endorsements between June 2017 and June 2018. Much of that came from his $20 million payday from his fight with Alexander Povetkin. He was set to earn $25 million for his next fight against Jarrell Miller, but the fight was called off after Miller failed several drug tests.
Anthony earned a whopping $54 million between June 2018 and June 2019, the vast majority of which came from his fight against Ruiz. That was enough to propel him to the ranks of the world’s highest-paid athletes.
Professional Achievement
It was confirmed in July 2013 that Joshua had turned professional under the Matchroom Sport promotional banner. In October 2013, he made his professional debut at the O2 Arena in London, defeating Italian Emanuele Leo by TKO in the first round. Joshua had a very successful first full year of his professional career, and in October of 2014, at the age of 24, he became the WBC International Heavyweight Champion at the O2 Arena.
Joshua won the Commonwealth Heavyweight title the following year, in September 2015, after defeating undefeated Scottish boxer Gary Cornish. Cornish was knocked out after only 90 seconds in the first round by Joshua. He then defeated another undefeated champion, Dillian Whyte, in December. The fight ended in a KO in the seventh round, and Joshua was reported to have won three million pounds just for this fight.
Joshua won his first world title in February 2016 by defeating IBF Heavyweight Champion Charles Martin at the O2 Arena. He then beat Dominic Breazeale in seven rounds in June. He successfully defended his IBF title in November against Eric Molina.
The WBA then agreed to a unification fight between Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko for the vacant WBA Super title. The fight’s ticket sales broke a box office record. Joshua defeated Klitschko in a dramatic TKO in front of a crowd of over 90,000 people. Despite widespread speculation about a rematch, Klitschko announced his retirement from boxing the following year. After fighting Carlos Takam, Joshua was able to keep his world titles until 2017, though Takam claims the fight was stopped too soon.
Joshua defeated fighter Joseph Parker in twelve rounds in Cardiff in 2018, the longest match Joshua had ever had to fight in his entire 20-0 career. He won the WBO Heavyweight title from Parker. Later, to keep his world titles, he fought and defeated Alexander Povetkin in seven rounds. He maintained his dominance for the majority of 2019 and 2020.
