Ahmed Musa became the first Nigerian to score in two FIFA World Cups, scoring twice against Iceland in the group stage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup and twice against Argentina in the 2014 FIFA World Cup. In his first two professional seasons, the Nigerian international was loaned to JUTH F.C., where he played 18 games and scored four goals.

The winger was transferred to Dutch club VVV-Venlo in the summer of 2010, but the transfer was denied because he was only 17 years old and thus ineligible. On March 8, 2011, Ahmed Musa was named AIT Footballer of the Year. Musa signed a four-year contract with CSKA Moscow on January 7, 2012, for an undisclosed fee. By June 1, 2015, Musa had signed a new four-year contract with CSKA until the end of the 2018-19 season.

Musa joined Leicester City for a club-record £16.6 million on July 8, 2016, and scored his first goals for the club in a friendly against Barcelona in the 2016 International Champions Cup, which they lost 4-2. On January 30, 2018, the striker returned to CSKA Moscow on loan for the rest of the 2017-18 season. Musa joined Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia on 4 August 2018 for a reported fee of £14.5 million.

Super Eagles Coach Lars Lagerbäck called him up in April 2010 to join the national team camp ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Musa made his Super Eagles debut on August 5, 2010, against Madagascar in a qualifier for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, coming on as a substitute for John Obi Mikel.
