Early Life: 

Cameron Jibril Thomaz, better known as Wiz Khalifa, was born on September 8, 1987 in Minot, North Dakota. His parents divorced when he was three years old because he was in the military. His family moved frequently as a result of his parents’ military service.

Before moving to Pittsburgh with his mother in 1996, Khalifa lived in Japan, the United Kingdom, and Germany. Khalifa began writing and performing his own songs not long after moving to Pittsburgh. Khalifa began recording music when he was 15 years old.

The studio where he recorded his songs was impressed by his lyrics and allowed him to record them for free. In 2004, Khalifa was 16 years old when Benjy Grinberg, the founder and President of Rostrum Records, discovered him. Wiz was signed to a recording and management contract by Grinberg.

Career: 

Khalifa’s first mixtape, “Prince of the City: Welcome to Pistovania,” was released in 2005. In 2006, he released his debut album, “Show and Prove.” The following year, Rolling Stone dubbed Khalifa a “artist to watch.” With Rostrum Records, he released two more mixtapes: “Grow Season” was released in July 2007, and “Prince of the City 2” was released in November 2007. He signed with Warner Bros. Records that same year and released the single “Say Yeah.” He released the mixtape “Star Power” in September 2008 and “Flight School” in April 2009 via Rostrum Records.

After delays in releasing his planned debut album for the label, “First Flight,” Khalifa left Warner Bros. Records in the summer of 2009. “Black and Yellow,” his first big hit single, peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

As of 2020, Khalifa had released seven studio albums: “Show and Prove” in 2006, “Deal or No Deal” in 2009, and “Show and Prove” in 2010. “Rolling Papers,” released in 2011. “Mac & Devin Go To High School” (with Snoop Dogg) in 2011, “O.N.I.F.C.” in 2012, “Blacc Hollywood” in 2014, and “Rolling Papers 2” in 2018.

Personal Life: 

Wiz was married to model Amber Rose from 2013 to 2014. Amber and Wiz’s son, Sebastian Taylor Thomaz, was born in February 2013. On December 12, 2012, the Pittsburgh City Council declared Wiz Khalifa Day (December 12, 2012).

Wiz is an outspoken supporter of marijuana, claiming that he spends $10,000 per month on marijuana alone and smokes it every day. Khalifa no longer pays for cannabis and is sponsored by The Cookie Company, a medical marijuana dispensary that sells his “Khalifa Kush” (KK) strain, which he developed in collaboration with RiverRock Cannabis, as of early 2014.
