Ang Lee, a Taiwanese director who has received international acclaim for his work, was one of the first Chinese-born directors to achieve critical and commercial success on both sides of the Pacific. He was born in Taipei in 1954 and studied theater directing at the University of Illinois before moving to the United States to study film production at New York University.

Lee spent the next six years working on screenplays after winning awards for his student work in 1985 (while at New York University, he also worked on Spike Lee’s acclaimed student film, Joe’s Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads), eventually making his directorial debut in 1992 with Pushing Hands. It won awards in Lee’s home country for its comedy about generational and cultural gaps in a Taiwanese family in New York.

His subsequent film, The Wedding Banquet (1993), explored cultural and generational differences through the lens of a gay New Yorker staging a marriage of convenience to please his visiting Taiwanese parents. The film received widespread acclaim, including a Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival, a Best Director award at the Seattle Film Festival, and Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations.
