Musicians and actors both try to move us with their performances, and while many people are good at one or the other, it’s a bit more difficult to find someone who can do both. For decades, musicians have attempted to make the transition from stage to screen, but let’s be honest: it doesn’t always go as planned. (Gigli, we’re looking at you.) There are, however, some musical stars who have proven to be surprisingly good actors. Here are 15 people who are fantastic on stage and in front of the camera!

David Bowie

It’s no surprise that David Bowie’s theatrical stage performance would translate well to the big screen. He has excelled in lead roles in films such as The Man Who Fell to Earth and Labyrinth, but he can also stand out in supporting roles, as seen in The Prestige. Bowie also appeared on television in shows such as Extras and Dream On, and he even won a Daytime Emmy in 2003!

Cher

Cher not only began acting in the 1980s, but she also amassed an impressive list of awards along the way. Her performance in Silkwood earned her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress, and a few years later she won an Oscar for her comedic performance in Moonstruck.

Jennifer Lopez

Whether she is teaching Robin Williams about diversity in Jack  or holding her own next to George Clooney in Out of Sight, Jennifer Lopez packs quite a punch. Mandy Moore

Justin Timberlake

His most famous role, however, was as nurse John in the hit film Precious, for which he received several high-profile award nominations.

Michael Jackson

The King of Pop doesn’t have a long filmography, but the quality of his roles is what matters. And it doesn’t get much better than his performance as the Scarecrow in the classic hit musical The Wiz.
