Early Life
Herb Alpert was born in Los Angeles, California on March 31, 1935. He grew up in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles’s Eastside, as the son of Tillie and Louis Leib Alpert. His parents were Jewish immigrants to the United States from Ukraine and Romania, and he was born into a musical family.
Herb began taking trumpet lessons when he was eight years old and began performing at dances when he was a teenager. He graduated from Fairfax High School in 1952 and then joined the Army. While in the Army, Herb would play the trumpet at ceremonies and aspired to be an actor. When he returned from the army, he enrolled at USC, where he was a member of the school’s renowned marching band, the USC Trojan Marching Band.

His music career took off when he signed with Keen Records as a songwriter. Herb began professionally writing and recording music for the first time in 1957. He built a small recording studio in his garage and wrote several top twenty hit songs with a musician named Rob Weerts.
For two years, Alpert wrote or co-wrote many songs that became Top 20 hits, including Sam Cooke’s “(What A) Wonderful World.” Herb began his recording career as a vocalist at Dot Records in 1960 as Dore Alpert. “Tell It to the Birds” was the first Carnival Records release.
Herb is probably best known for forming the band “Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass.” In the early 1960s, he was at a bullfight in Tijuana, Mexico, and overheard a brass band, which inspired him to create his signature sound. Herb overdubbed his trumpet on two different tape machines to achieve this signature sound.
Originally, the Tijuana Brass consisted of Herb himself slightly out of sync overdubbing his own trumpet. He paid for his first single, “The Lonely Bull,” which became a Top 10 hit in the fall of 1962 after he personally funded it. His debut album, “The Lonely Bull,” debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard Pop charts. Alpert later collaborated with The Wrecking Crew, a group of L.A. session musicians, on his subsequent albums.
By the end of 1964, there was a growing demand for Tijuana Brass live appearances, so Alpert auditioned and hired a team of session men: John Pisano on electric guitar, Lou Pagani on piano, Nick Ceroli on drums, Pat Senatore on bass guitar, and Tonn Kalash on trumpet. Herb Alpert sang and played trumpet for the band. The newly formed band made its debut in 1965 and quickly became one of the highest-paid acts on the scene.
The group’s album “Whipped Cream and Other Delights” debuted at number one on the Billboard charts in 1965 and remained there for more than three years. “Going Places” was the title of the second album released that year. The Tijuana brass outsold The Beatles in 1966, selling more than 13 million albums.
That same year, the Guinness Book of World Records recognized Alpert for setting a new record by simultaneously placing five albums in the Top 20 on the Billboard Pop Album chart, an accomplishment that has never been duplicated. Four of those albums were in the Top 10 at the same time in the first week of April of that year.
Throughout the 1960s, an album or two was released each year. During this time, Alpert’s only No. 1 single was a solo effort, “This Guy’s in Love with You,” written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. In a 1968 CBS Television special titled Beat of the Brass, filmed in Malibu, Alpert sang it to his first wife.
Alpert disbanded the Tijuana Brass in 1969, but the group reformed and released another album in 1971. In 1973, he formed Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass with some of the original Tijuana Brass members and some new members.
In 1974 and 1975, this new version of the Brass released two albums and toured. After being invited to perform for Olympic athletes at the Los Angeles Summer Games in 1984, Alpert reformed the Brass for a third time. The invitation led to the release of the Bullish album and tour.
Alpert had a successful solo career in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Herb Alpert would go on to release 28 albums, five of which became number one hits, 14 of which went platinum, and 15 of which went gold.
